How to dress for an interview

The first impression you make on a prospective employer is the most important one. The first judgment a recruiter makes is going to be based on how you look and what you wear. The old adage could never be so true, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."That is why it is always primordial to dress professionally for a job interview.

The ideal attire for an interview is professional, classy and sharp. It matches or is slightly dressier than the normal work attire of the company – appropriateness is the key word here. The ideal attire also makes you feel comfortable, confident and powerful when you put it on in the morning.

Women's Recommended Interview Attire:
  • Suit (navy, black or dark grey)
  • The suit skirt should be long enough so you can sit down comfortably
  • Coordinated blouse
  • Conservative shoes
  • Limited jewellery (no dangling earrings or arms full of bracelets)
  • No jewellery is better than cheap jewellery
  • Professional hairstyle
  • Neutral pantyhose
  • Light make-up and perfume
  • Neatly manicured clean nails
  • Portfolio or briefcase

Men's Recommended Interview Attire:
  • Suit (solid colour - navy or dark grey)
  • Long sleeve shirt (white or coordinated with the suit)
  • Belt
  • Tie
  • Dark socks, conservative leather shoes
  • Little or no jewellery
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Limit the aftershave
  • Neatly trimmed nails
  • Portfolio or briefcase

Proscribed clothing items:
  • Leggings
  • Jeans
  • Short skirts
  • Transparent clothing
  • Sleeveless shirts
  • Dresses or blouses that show cleavage
  • T-shirts with a pattern or with writing
  • Sandals that show the entire feet
  • Dark nail polish
  • Heavy makeup
  • Eccentric hairdo
  • Strong perfume

Never forget that you never get a second chance to make a first impression!
